FTQ-Construction, affiliated with the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ), is the largest union in the construction industry. FTQ-Construction represents workers in various sectors of the industry, including civil engineering, residential and commercial construction, as well as public works. See website

MANDATE

In 2018, we had the opportunity to design the FTQ-Construction website. Since then, the union’s digital needs and identity have quickly evolved. To reflect this progress, FTQ-Construction decided to continue its relationship with us, their web agency, by once again entrusting TREIZE with the mandate to redesign their WordPress website.

OBJECTIVES

For the website design, our objectives were to:

  • Simplify the user experience to better meet the needs of the target audience;
  • Improve FTQ-Construction’s digital presence by leveraging, among other things, the WordPress blog space;
  • Create a platform with a modern design that reflects the organization’s new visual identity.

FINDING YOUR UNION REPRESENTATIVE IN JUST A FEW CLICKS

One of the main needs of union members on a daily basis is to find the contact information for their union representative. Depending on their trade, each member is associated with a local section, which may have several offices across Quebec. However, it is not uncommon for less involved members to be unaware of their local section’s name, making it difficult for them to find the desired contact information.

Although a “Find your representative” page existed on the previous website, the FTQ-Construction team still received a large number of requests related to finding a representative through the contact form or the site’s live chat.
To reduce the influx of these requests and encourage members to independently find the information they need, we completely redesigned the search experience.

Now, a search bar first asks the user which trade they practice. To address common typing errors, a live search suggests possible answers as soon as the first characters are entered.

Based on the trade entered, an interactive map displaying all the local section offices is then presented to the user. The user can easily select the office closest to their location and access all the desired contact information.

Of course, we made sure to offer an equally high-quality experience on mobile, considering that workers often use their lunch break to browse on their phones.

A hub of useful resources for members

To make life easier for FTQ-Construction members, we set up an online documentation center. This centralized hub brings together all the essential resources for construction workers, such as collective agreements, calendars, and promotional tools. Thanks to this new feature, members can now quickly find the information they need without having to browse through different pages of the website.

Register for the health and safety course in just a few clicks

To work on a construction site in Quebec, workers are required to complete their ASP health and safety course. These courses are offered by FTQ-Construction, and their digital platform allows for online registration. The registration system has been redesigned to improve and simplify the user experience. Workers can now register and pay their admission fees in just a few clicks through a web form. It’s simple, fast, and accessible to everyone.

Visual identity refresh

The website redesign was an opportunity to modernize FTQ-Construction’s visual identity. By adopting a bolder typography and a more assertive color palette, we created a more contemporary brand image that aligns with the current challenges of the construction industry. The choice of an all-caps, heavy-weight font emphasizes the union’s strength and character, while also evoking the power of its members.

The use of black-and-white photography pays tribute to FTQ-Construction’s rich history, while adding a touch of modernity and sophistication. FTQ-Construction’s signature red is used as an accent color to reinforce the visual identity and create a striking visual contrast.

A commitment to inclusion: digital accessibility

With the goal of making the website accessible to as many people as possible, we integrated an innovative solution that ensures the site complies with Web accessibility standards (WCAG) while providing an improved user experience for everyone, especially people with visual, auditory, or motor impairments.

Thanks to this solution, users can personalize their experience: adjust font size, change contrast settings, and use a screen reader.
