It’s well known that the new (not so new) web trend since 2022 is the emergence of numerous AI bots that can write, instruct, and even complete an entire task.
Indeed, ChatGPT, since its launch in November 2022, has been a sensation not only in the tech world but also in other fields thanks to its simplicity and human-like aspect.
For those less familiar with this tool, ChatGPT is a creation of OpenAI: an artificial intelligence capable of producing answers to your questions, completing sentences, translating texts, writing articles, engaging in dialogues with individuals, and much more. The tool also proves excellent for writing computer code, which is what personally attracted me to use it.
HERE’S HOW CHATGPT HAS CHANGED THE WAY I WORK AS A WEB DEVELOPER.
Web development can sometimes be complex: different programming languages, various technologies, diverse web platforms, etc.
Websites such as Stack Overflow or W3Schools were created to help developers by allowing them to ask questions on forums or access documentation regarding the specifics of several programming languages. For example, early in my career, when I wanted to get information on how to center a <div>, most of the time I followed this path:
Language Documentation ➝ Random Forum ➝ YouTube Video ➝ W3School or Stack Overflow
As you can see, I could spend a lot of time on one element when, in the end, this manipulation is quick and easy. In addition to spending too much time, another disadvantage of this method is not having someone’s opinion to know if what I’m doing is correct: Am I writing the code correctly? Can I perform such a manipulation? Can I use a certain technology with another, etc.?
Now, with ChatGPT, when I’m stuck on an element in my code, I simply ask the bot to tell me what’s wrong with it (without forgetting, of course, to copy my code into the input bar). Not only does it tell me what’s wrong, but it also identifies what I need to change in my code for everything to work. This allows me to quickly return to my code and continue my work without wasting too much time searching for answers.
THE HUMAN STILL REIGNS
The tool also allows me to ask it to write the beginning of an algorithm in a specific language to see how a bot breaks down a certain problem, and then I can check and adapt what it has created for me to use in our workflow. However, caution is required: it is not the answer to everything. It is essential to accurately verify the information it provides, especially if you ask it to write texts requiring sources.
In summary, ChatGPT is a powerful tool that makes it easy to create or write texts, and even computer code. It has helped me enormously since its inception, and the tool will continue to evolve over time. It’s also worth mentioning several other artificial intelligences that are more specifically designed for programming: codeGPT, Replit, Bugasura, etc., which deserve to be explored.
