It is in this spirit of openness and innovation that the agency recently gave me the opportunity to work from Isla Mujeres, Mexico, for a week.

As the self-proclaimed ambassador of fun at TREIZE, being able to have a change of scenery while continuing my missions was an opportunity I seized at the first chance. Not having had the chance to go somewhere sunny for a long time, working from such a paradisiacal location is truly something I could never have benefited from in a traditional job.

From the very first day, Quebec changed its clocks, but Mexico did not. I had to slightly adjust my schedule to be in sync with the team in Montreal, but from the start, everything went very smoothly by beginning my workdays slightly earlier. This hour ahead was the perfect time to handle feedback received the previous evening so that the Montreal team could take a look at the start of their day.

This change of environment had a positive impact on my creativity and productivity, but there is a downside to this benefit: frustration. On the first day, you can’t wait for the day to end so you can go and enjoy the outdoors. My advice for avoiding this frustration is to segment the stay. Take those first few days for yourself, acclimate to the location, find the best spots, and anticipate your upcoming routine. That is how the lunch break at Al Natural (big recommendation for the tacos, by the way) became my ritual to prepare for the afternoon workshops. What could be better than returning calmly to my workstation with a full stomach, having completed a morning more focused on production.

One advantage I hadn’t anticipated was that the time difference allowed me to finish earlier. A real godsend, as I could go sunbathe during the last hours of the day and head to Playa Norte to watch the sunset at the same time almost every day.

In creative professions, it is easy to get lost in a routine. However, it is essential to nourish one’s imagination to maintain a certain spontaneity in the creative process. Going away alone, working with your feet in the sand while being lulled by the sound of the waves, helps contribute to this process and reframes the way one approaches creative work. Let’s be honest, inspiration comes much more easily with a coffee while looking at the sea than in any open-plan office.

This nomadic work stay allowed me to better approach flexibility at work. It also made me maintain a certain personal discipline, making me experience a vacation with a more structured rhythm than what I have known until now. It is an incredible opportunity to be able to combine my professional setting with the possibility of traveling, without one impacting the other. If I had to do it again, I would, and I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to do the same.

At TREIZE, remote work is an integral part of the corporate culture (even if we also enjoy being in the office), offering the team a flexibility that allows us to balance professional and personal life.
